Ngorongoro Highlands Tanzania
NGORONGORO · NORTHERN TANZANIA

Highlands & ancient landscapes.

Walk volcanic highlands, descend into remote craters and follow a human story written into this landscape over millions of years.

01 · NGORONGORO HIGHLANDS

Leave the safari road. Enter the landscape.

The highlands rise beyond the crater rim into a quieter world of volcanic ridges, open valleys, Maasai country and walking trails.

Here the journey changes pace. Travelling on foot brings you closer to the scale of the landscape — moving between villages, grazing country and volcanic peaks rather than watching everything through a vehicle window.

For adventurous travellers, these highlands also form the beginning of a remarkable route toward Empakaai and eventually the Rift Valley below at Lake Natron.

02 · EMPAKAAI CRATER

Descend into a quieter crater.

Empakaai is smaller and more remote than Ngorongoro, surrounded by steep forested walls with a crater lake lying far below the rim.

The experience is less about game-drive density and more about walking, silence and volcanic scale. From the rim, the trail descends through forest toward the crater floor.

Empakaai also sits naturally along the highland route continuing north toward Lake Natron.

03 · OLDUPAI GORGE

Read history inside the earth.

Oldupai Gorge adds another dimension to Ngorongoro: archaeology, geology and the extraordinary story of human origins.

Layers of exposed sediment preserve an important record of early human development and changing environments across an immense period of time.

Combined with Laetoli, Oldupai creates a powerful educational journey through the landscapes where some of humanity's earliest history has been studied.

04 · LAETOLI

Footprints across deep time.

Laetoli connects the volcanic landscape of northern Tanzania directly to the story of early human movement.

Ancient footprints preserved in volcanic ash provide an extraordinary physical record of early hominins walking across this landscape millions of years ago.

Together with Oldupai Gorge, Laetoli transforms this part of Ngorongoro into something more than a wildlife destination — it becomes an open classroom in human history.
