Conservation in the Field

Day 1 — Welcome to Tanzania
Arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport → Transfer to Moshi
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), where your expedition guide will warmly welcome you to Tanzania. From here, enjoy a comfortable drive to Moshi, a vibrant town located beneath the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro.
After checking in at your lodge, take time to relax following your international journey. Later, meet your expedition leaders for an introductory orientation, learn about the communities and conservation projects you will visit, and prepare for the meaningful journey ahead.
Day 2 -Moshi → Kisiwani Village

After breakfast, depart Moshi and journey through Tanzania's picturesque countryside towards Kisiwani Village, where your educational expedition truly begins. Along the way, witness everyday rural life, fertile farmland, and welcoming communities that offer a glimpse into the landscapes shaping this region.
Upon arrival, settle into the Kisiwani Hostel before meeting your local hosts and expedition leaders. During the afternoon orientation, you'll be introduced to Hillock School, the surrounding community, and the conservation and cultural experiences awaiting you over the coming days.
Day 3 – Full Day at Hillock School

Spend the day at Hillock School, working alongside students, teachers, and the local community while gaining first-hand insight into education in rural Tanzania. Participate in classroom activities, support learning through interactive sessions, and build meaningful connections with the children and staff.
Beyond the classroom, take part in community-led environmental initiatives, including tree planting and improving outdoor learning spaces. Through these hands-on activities, experience how education, conservation, and community development come together to create lasting positive change.
Day 4 – Life Beyond the Classroom
School & Village Farm Visits
Begin the morning at Hillock School, continuing to engage with students and teachers through interactive classroom activities while experiencing the daily rhythm of village life. Every conversation and shared activity offers a deeper understanding of education, culture, and community in rural Tanzania.
During the afternoon, visit nearby rice fields, banana plantations, and family-owned farms to discover how agriculture supports local livelihoods. Meet local farmers, learn traditional cultivation techniques, and explore how sustainable farming practices contribute to food security, environmental stewardship, and community resilience.
Day 5 - From Classroom to Farmland
School & Village Farm Visits
Begin the morning at Hillock School, continuing to work alongside students and teachers through engaging classroom activities before heading into the surrounding countryside. This is another opportunity to strengthen relationships while gaining a deeper understanding of everyday life within the local community.
In the afternoon, visit rice fields, banana plantations, and family-owned farms to learn how agriculture supports rural livelihoods in Tanzania. Meet local farmers, discover traditional farming techniques, and explore how sustainable agriculture contributes to food security and community development.
Days 6 - Community Connections

Begin the morning at Hillock School, continuing to support classroom activities and engage with students and teachers through meaningful learning experiences. As your time in Kisiwani progresses, you'll gain a deeper appreciation for the strong connection between education, culture, and everyday village life.
In the afternoon, explore the local community by visiting village markets and community-led projects that support education, agriculture, and daily livelihoods. Meet local residents, discover how small businesses contribute to the local economy, and conclude the day with a group reflection on the experiences and lessons gained throughout your stay in Kisiwani.
Day 7 - Farewell to Hillock School
Last Day at Hillock School & Community Home Visits
Spend your final morning at Hillock School, celebrating the friendships and memories created throughout the week. Join students and teachers for one last day of shared learning before expressing your gratitude to the community that has welcomed you into their daily lives.
Later, visit local family homes for an authentic glimpse into village life, learning about traditions, family values, and everyday living in rural Tanzania. During the afternoon, say goodbye to your hosts before travelling to Karamba Maasai Village, where a completely new chapter of your expedition awaits among one of East Africa's most iconic cultures.
Day 8 —Into Maasai Country
Maasai Bush Skills & Cultural Immersion
Wake up in the heart of Karamba Maasai Village, where your cultural immersion begins. Guided by Maasai elders, learn traditional bush skills passed down through generations, including wildlife tracking, identifying animal footprints, recognising feeding behaviour, discovering medicinal plants, and understanding how the Maasai have lived alongside wildlife for centuries.
Throughout the day, experience life in a genuine non-tourist Maasai community while gaining a deeper appreciation of their traditions, survival skills, and close relationship with nature. As evening falls, gather around the campfire for storytelling, traditional songs, and an unforgettable night beneath Africa's star-filled sky.
Day 9 — A Day in Maasai Life
Maasai Cultural Immersion & Conservation
Spend a full day living alongside the Maasai community, experiencing their traditions through genuine participation in daily life. Join local families as they herd cattle, maintain traditional bomas, and share the customs and values that have sustained Maasai culture for generations.
Throughout the day, discover how Maasai communities work together to protect both people and wildlife by participating in conservation initiatives focused on water access, sustainable land management, and reducing human–wildlife conflict. As evening approaches, enjoy wildlife observation before gathering around the campfire to reflect on another unforgettable day in the African wilderness.
Day 10 — From Culture to Conservation
Karamba Village → Mkomazi National Park
After breakfast, bid farewell to the Maasai community and travel to Mkomazi National Park, one of Tanzania's most important conservation landscapes. Bordering Kenya's Tsavo ecosystem, Mkomazi is home to pioneering wildlife recovery programmes that protect some of Africa's most endangered species.
Visit the renowned Black Rhino Sanctuary and learn how dedicated conservation teams are working to restore healthy rhino populations. Continue to the African Wild Dog Conservation Centre, where you'll discover the challenges and successes of protecting one of the continent's rarest predators through science, habitat management, and community partnerships.
Day 11- Conservation in Action
Mkomazi National Park → Arusha
Begin the morning with a final exploration of Mkomazi National Park, observing its diverse wildlife and remarkable landscapes while reflecting on the conservation programmes that protect endangered species such as the Black Rhino and African Wild Dog. This final field session offers valuable insight into the long-term commitment required to safeguard Tanzania's natural heritage.
After lunch, depart Mkomazi and travel back to Arusha. Along the journey, take time to reflect on the lessons learned from both traditional Maasai knowledge and modern conservation practices before arriving at your hotel for a relaxing evening.
Day 12 - The Kingdom of Elephants
Tarangire National Park Safari
After breakfast, journey to Tarangire National Park, one of Tanzania's most spectacular wildlife destinations, renowned for its enormous elephant herds and ancient baobab trees. As you explore the park with your guide, discover how this remarkable ecosystem supports an incredible diversity of wildlife throughout the year.
Enjoy an exciting game drive with a picnic lunch surrounded by nature while learning about elephant behaviour, biodiversity, and the delicate balance between wildlife conservation and surrounding communities. Later in the afternoon, continue to the Ngorongoro Highlands for a relaxing evening overlooking the Great Rift Valley.
Day 13 - The Living Crater

Rise early and descend more than 600 metres into the breathtaking Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site often described as the world's largest intact volcanic caldera. This extraordinary ecosystem is home to one of Africa's highest concentrations of wildlife, offering exceptional opportunities to observe lions, elephants, buffalo, hippos, hyenas, and, with a little luck, the endangered Black Rhino.
Throughout your game drive, explore how wildlife, conservation, and the Maasai people coexist within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Enjoy a picnic lunch on the crater floor before continuing your exploration of this remarkable landscape, where every encounter offers new insights into Tanzania's rich natural heritage.
Day 14 - Culture, Creativity & Reflection
Mto wa Mbu Cultural Experience → Arusha
After breakfast, travel to the vibrant village of Mto wa Mbu, one of Tanzania's most culturally diverse communities, where more than 120 ethnic groups live and work together. Explore the village on a guided cultural walk, visit local artisans, browse colourful markets, and discover traditional wood carving, painting, and other crafts that reflect Tanzania's rich cultural heritage.
Meet local families and community members while learning how culture, agriculture, tourism, and conservation work together to support sustainable livelihoods. Later in the afternoon, return to Arusha for your farewell dinner, where you'll reflect on the unforgettable experiences, friendships, and knowledge gained throughout your expedition.
